The Latest Incarnation of Hester

posted Wednesday, 4 November 2009

My galleys/ARC’s (advance reader’s copy) have arrived!  There are two of them, and they’re paperback because they are preview copies for reviewers.  Still, they have the cover on them and look very beautiful and official.  I have mentioned before that I have never rated actual ARC’s with previous books, so I’m very excited and very happy.

I also had to laugh.  At the top of the cover, in big print, it says, “Bestselling author Katherine Howe asks, ‘Have you ever closed The Scarlet Letter and yearned to see what the future holds for Hester Prynne and her headstrong daughter Pearl?’  THIS IS THE ANSWER.”  That last line is centered all by itself, and it’s all in caps, so it kind of looks like the book answers a much more important question, like “Have you ever wondered exactly what’s on God’s mind these days? THIS IS THE ANSWER.”  I don’t think this part will be on the book in bookstores, because it does distract the reader from the beauty of the cover.

It just so happens that my critique group meets tonight, so I’ll be having a bit of show and tell.  I definitely like this additional stop on the publishing journey.

It's funny the kind of oddities that can slip past even a well-trained group of people's eyes...

In any case, this is all very exciting, and Lauren and I are both looking forward to getting a copy when it comes out, though I may have to re-read Scarlet Letter first, as it's been, oh, a decade since I read it.

Paula, you should revel in this moment! I can't recall if I commented on the cover when you posted it but it is AWESOME (with a capital A, tee hee). -- I can't wait to read the book and I hope it gets the attention I'm sure it deserves. Let us know when we ought to start posting the cover on Facebook and bragging about our friend's new book. !!

I've never read The Scarlet Letter completely through and I read the pre-submission draft and I was easily able to follow the story.
